Who was Isaac in the Bible?
A name carries great authority. It sets you apart from the rest. It triggers memories and the sound of it calls you to attention anywhere.
Many of the names in the Bible accomplishes even more. They were descriptions of important facts about one’s past and future hopes. Abraham and Sarah’s choice of the name Isaac, which means “He laughs,” must have created a variety of feelings in each of them every time it was spoken. It must have brought back Sarah’s shocking laughter when she was told she would have a child at her age. And at other times it must have brought back a joyful feeling of receiving of receiving their long awaited answer to prayer for a child. Most important is that it was a testimony of God’s power in making His promise a reality.
In Abraham’s family of forceful intentions, Isaac was the quiet type unless he was specifically called to take action. He was the only child from the time Sarah got rid of Ishmael until Abraham arranged his marriage to Rebekah.
In his own family Isaac had a patriarchal position, but Rebekah had the power. Rather than stand his ground Isaac found it easier to lie or compromise to avoid confrontations. In spite of these shortcomings, Isaac was part of God’s plan. His role model father Abraham gave him a great gift of faith in the one true God. God’s promise to create a great nation through which He would bless the world would be passed on by Isaac to his twin sons.
It isn’t hard for us to relate to Isaac’s weaknesses, but keep in mind that God works through people in spite of their shortcomings and often through them. When you pray to have God use you, you will find that God’s desire to use you is even greater than your desire to be used.
Do you allow God to guide you through your life? Do you know God? Do you know Jesus?
Are you certain that you are going to heaven? If the answer is no or your not really sure and there is something stirring inside you at this very moment to do this, then all you have to do is say a small prayer and you can be assured of your name being added to the Book of Life. Go to the prayer of salvation and pray the words out loud and believe in your heart and you will be saved.
Isaac’s story is told in Genesis 17:15 – 35. He is also mentioned in Romans 9:7, 8; Hebrews 11:17 – 20 and James 2:21 – 24
