Who was Korah in the Bible?
When we are not content with what we have, and try to get more than we deserve, sometimes we end up with nothing. Korah, one of Israelite’s leaders was just such a person. Korah was a Levite who assisted in the daily functions of the Tabernacle. Shortly after Israel’s rebellion against God (Numbers 13:14), Korah incited his own mini-rebellion. He recruited a grievance committee and confronted Moses and Aaron. Their list of complaints boiled down to three statements: (1) you are no better than anyone else; (2) everyone in Israel had been chosen of the Lord; (3) we don’t need to obey you (Moses). It’s really amazing how Korah twisted the first two statements, which were both true, to come up with the wrong conclusion.
Moses would have agreed that he was no better than anyone else. He would have also agreed that all Israelites were God’s chosen people. But Korah’s application of these truths was wrong. Not all Israelites were chosen to lead. Korah’s hidden claim was this: “I have as much right to lead as Moses does.” His error not only cost him his job, but it cost Korah his life.
Korah’s story gives up numerous warnings: (1) Don’t let your desire for what someone else has make you discontented with what you already have. (2) Don’t try to raise your self-esteem by attacking someone else’s. (3) Don’t use God’s word to support what you want, rather than allowing its entirety to shape your wants. (4) Don’t expect to find satisfaction in power and position. God may very well want to work through you in the position you are in now.
Wanting to do more for God is admirable, but overstepping your position can be costly. Sometimes we have a tenancy to want to do more than we are capable of. And even worse, more than God wants us to do. Instead of jumping out and doing things we need to ask God for guidance in what we want to do. Patience is the key when asking God what to do. He will usually open or close some doors through the people in your life according to His plan.
Personal Testimony:
When I first arrived back here to Connecticut there was a church right up the street from where I had moved to. I had heard that they were without a minister and I immediately thought what a great opportunity God has put before me. I was excited about going to the service Sunday morning and making my presence known. When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was that only one other person besides myself had brought a Bible with them to the service. When the reverend started his sermon about Jesus’ parable of the loaned money, (Matthew 25:14 – 30) I was astonished at the fact that his teaching was no where even close to what the parable was about. My first reaction was to jump up and ask him in front of everyone why he was not telling the truth and where did he get this sermon. And then I would continue to explain the parable so that everyone would understand it. God’s reaction to me was to keep me quiet, which is what I did. After the service I told the reverend that his view on the parable was interesting. Notice I said his view.
My simply being excited about the church needing a minister didn’t mean that I was the one for the job. In fact, that church was based totally on religion, which is something Christians are not about. Oh how I thank God for giving me the correct action to take in this situation, since in all honesty I am not ready to be a minister or pastor of a church. Besides possibly making everyone angry would have done more harm than good. God continued to guide me to a church in the area where I am getting involved by helping them with their internet needs, something I am really good at.
